Hendry left after the first series; Steed then became the main character, partnered with a succession of assistants. His most famous assistants were intelligent, stylish and assertive women: Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) and Tara King (Linda Thorson). The series ran from 1961 until 1969, screening as one-hour episodes for its entire run. The pilot episode, "Hot Snow", aired on 7 January 1961. The Avengers was produced by ABC Television, a contractor within the ITV network. After a merger with Rediffusion London in July 1968, ABC Television became Thames Television, which continued production of the series, though it was still broadcast under the ABC name. By 1969, The Avengers was shown in more than 90 countries. ITV produced a sequel series, The New Avengers (1976–1977), with Patrick Macnee returning as John Steed, and two new partners. PRACTICE QUESTION

How is britishness represented in this scene in terms of mise en scene?

The British typically had a bowler hat and thats what people would interpret them as, they also had very typical roles as the man would go make the money and the female would stay at home doing the chores.

How is war paranoia/racism represented in this scene through mise en scene?

In the scene the man lights a lamp because of the blackout, they must not turn on any lights because when there is a night time raid the bombers can see the lights which are targets, this shows that the man was paranoid of turning on the lights in case of a raid. Fear of Russians.

In the 1960s there was a big gender division, men typically went to work and make the money and the women would stay at home cooking and cleaning or looking after the kids.

CUFFS

Active audiences chose what they watch and don't believe everything they hear.

Passive audience will sit and take in all information they see or hear.

The avengers would have had a passive audience whereas cuffs would have had an active audience.

COMEDY ELEMENTS
Younger adults and teens as they have a more relaxed humour.
Multicultural characters.
Authentic location.

CUFFS AND SOCIAL VALUES

The BBC is a PSB which means it is created for the benefit of the public, it is funded through the license fee, this makes them have to follow a set of guidelines to justify where our money goes.

The pre watershed scheduling of 8pm effected the representation of gender, ethnicity and sexuality.
The representation of these factors was significant as the pre watershed timing restricted the directors in how dark and detailed the the representation had to be,as cuffs had to match the darkness of other police crime dramas but they had to nullify the content and sensitivity. In Britain nowadays it would be out of order to only have white males in cuffs, they us a mixed gender cast with multiple different ethnicities and races.

PSB REMIT

How effectively the BBC meets its PSB remit.

Public benefit rather than to serve purely commercial interests.

Cuffs meets the PSB remit and the BBCs core mission as its a show that is to entertain the public rather than to serve purely commercial interests. It educates the audience about the cultural diversity in the UK, the show involves a high ranked black police officer and Ryan a character who is black,it also informs the public about how hard police life is,dealing with silly stag parties on a nudist beach. The show educates people as it teaches them traditional social values. The show involves multicultural characters, different genders and their roles and different races and how they are presented and treated.

  • cross cutting
  • fast paced during tense scenes
  • slo motion showing him being anxious and confused
  • switches to hand held camera, makes you feel involved
  • blurring shows confusion, blurry haze inside the house
